DeviceNet是一個簡單的網(wǎng)絡(luò)化解決方案，降低了成本及安裝設(shè)備和配線的時間，并提供良好的互換性，使得多家供貨商的產(chǎn)品可以像組件一樣可以互換。DeviceNet是一個開放的網(wǎng)絡(luò)標(biāo)準(zhǔn)。其規(guī)范和協(xié)議都是開放的。供貨商不必購買硬件，軟件，或許可權(quán)限，就可以把設(shè)備接入一個DeviceNet系統(tǒng)。其規(guī)范文本可以從Open DeviceNet Vendor Association Inc.( ODVA)獲得。
DeviceNet在達成眾多復(fù)雜設(shè)備之間的互操作性的同時，也允許簡單設(shè)備之間的互換性。DeviceNet通訊連接基于廣播的通訊協(xié)議，即CAN協(xié)議。1996年，CAN芯片的出貨量超過10million片。主要的一些CAN芯片的供貨商有Intel, Motorola, Phillips and Hitachi.
DeviceNet的出現(xiàn)有兩個目的：
傳送與現(xiàn)場級設(shè)備相關(guān)的控制信息.
傳送其它與系統(tǒng)控制間接相關(guān)的信息，比如配置信息(Configuration).
